Boston Public Garden - BOSTON, MA

Over a five year period DCI has been selected by two landscape architectural firms to provide topographical and utility location services for portions of the world renowned Boston Public Garden.

In 1996, DCI provided very detailed survey data to Pressley Associates for the design of grading, drainage and pedestrian access improvements. Transitions between the park’s walkways and surrounding street sidewalks were improved particularly for handicap access. The Scope of Work included the location of all physical features, surface and below ground utility structures, trees, swales, drainage ditches, and all changes in grade.

In 2001, DCI provided an existing conditions survey to be used by Pat Loheed, landscape architect, in the design of renovations to the fountain at the base of the Ether Monument (pictured at upper left). In addition to complete topography, DCI located water and electrical sources to be utilized by Loheed in the design of a new pumping system for the fountain. The 40 foot tall monument, located in the Beacon/Arlington corner of the park, commemorates the first use of ether as an anesthetic under the Etherdome at Massachusetts General Hospital on October 16, 1846. The monument is the oldest statue in the Public Garden, presented to the city of Boston in 1868. The Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists is presently seeking to restore the monument to its original beauty.
