Magoun Square Reconstruction, SOMERVILLE, MA

Magoun Square is a compact commercial business district filled with small businesses, shops, and restaurants that principally serve the surrounding neighborhood in Somerville near the Medford line. At the urging of area businesses and residents, the City seat aside money to help revitalize the square.
The city hired Design Consultants, Inc. (DCI) to design roadway and sidewalk improvements, new drainage lines, a new street lighting system, traffic relocation improvements, and streetscape enhancements (including new curbing, fences, trees, signing, pavement markings, and other incidental items).
A major component of the reconstruction program entails improvement to the overall street-scape as a way to encourage more pedestrian traffic and attract high-quality businesses to Magoun Square.
Public participation in the project was high and the excitement created by news of the reconstruction reaped benefits for Magoun Square residents and businesses even before the design was complete. The positive publicity drew increased attention to existing businesses and enticed other business owners to give greater consideration to to locating in Magoun Square.
The DCI completed its design and the construction contract was put out to bid in late 2004.
