Main Street Reconstruction in ANDOVER, MA

This section of Main Street provides vehicular and pedestrian access to the restaurants, retailers and public services that line this classic New England downtown. The clutter of street furniture, street hardware and the lack of adequate wheelchair ramps hampered pedestrian access along Main Street. Vehicular congestion along Main Street often encouraged locals to use back roads through the adjacent and formerly quiet residential areas.

The goals of the Main Street redesign included improved efficiency and safety of vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle movement. These goals were accomplished with the addition of state-of-the-art signalization, rerouting bicycle lanes, new turning lanes where none previously existed, and the reorganization of the sidewalk environment with new, appropriately placed streetscape equipment. Curb extensions were added to improve turning movements and reduce pedestrian crossing widths. Pedestrian oriented spaces, such as the Public Library and Elm Square, received special urban design attention to accommodate heavy public use for the foreseeable future. Main Street will now accommodate through traffic, and reduce traffic through residential neighborhoods. Another important element of the Main Street Reconstruction is the ongoing participation of the Andover Main Street Committee, which provides valuable public input. DCI cooperated with the Committee to provide information regarding roadway signalization, sidewalk construction, equipment selection and MHD funding eligibility. Design is complete and the project is on the 2005 TIP list.
