McLean Hospital, BELMONT, MA

McLean Hospital is a 238-acre site in Belmont, MA. Its present use is as a psychiatric hospital. The topography is predominantly hilly with some wetland areas and meadows. Its vegetation is a mixture of pine forest. The site includes numerous buildings, driveways, roadways, parking areas, walking and biking trails and general open space.
Civil duties during Phase I included the preparation of site utility plans for 14 single-family residences as well as the planning and design of a 2,800 foot long municipal sewer extension. Initial planning considered alternative methods of sewage collection. Gravity cross-country and low-pressure sewer systems were investigated. Both systems had individual merits, however, a gravity system was deemed to be the most cost-effective solution over the life of the sewer facilities, even though extensive rock excavation would result in a higher initial capital expenditure.
