Route 109, MILLIS / MEDWAY, MA

Design Consultants, Inc. (DCI) developed 25%, 75% and Final Plans, Specifications, Estimates and a Functional Design Report based on numerous discussions and reviews with MHD, FHWA, and the Towns of Millis and Medway. Route 109 is a major regional arterial servicing the communities west along the corridor from Route 128 to Route 495 and beyond. Route 109 supports much of Medway and Millis business and industrial uses.
Existing Conditions
The Route 109 project includes arterial design and the signalization of two intersections. The intersection of Route 109 and Pleasant Street presents many deficiencies. Poorly defined movements and turn priorities have made this intersection notorious for serious accidents. The intersection lacks curb reveals, turning lanes, sidewalks, cross-walks and any other pedestrian amenities. The combined effects of the skew angle and the five legs intersecting at different points make this intersection very difficult to negotiate and allows for confusion among drivers.
Proposed Conditions
To improve existing conditions and reduce accidents, a fully actuated traffic control signal along with pedestrian push buttons is proposed for this location. New crosswalks and stop lines, pavement markings, concrete sidewalks, granite curbing, new turning lanes, improved turning radii and attractive landscaping are all part of the proposed improvements for this intersection. Eliminating one of the five legs will make this intersection a four-legged configuration that improves traffic patterns, enhances safety and reduces accidents.
