Tsongas Arena & Lowell Riverwalk in Lowell, MA

Design Consultants, Inc. (DCI) served as the project surveyors for the design and construction Paul Tsongas Arena and the Merrimack Riverwalk, two landmark projects in the City of Lowell’s efforts to revitalize its riverfront industrialized area.

The construction of the scenic mile-long pedestrian way serves to link the two new entertainment and sporting facilities with the University of Lowell Campus, the historic Boott Mills, and other National Park Service sites. Over a two year period DCI performed all phases of survey work, from initial property line and base plan preparation through construction to preparation of As- Built plans. In addition, DCI provided engineering expertise relative to underground raceway structural issues. The greatest challenge DCI met initially was the need for extensive research of the title and utility infrastructure for twelve parcels along the Merrimack River including parcels with abandoned industrial uses. The need to compile and coordinate dozens and on-going surveys by other firms additional challenge handled successfully. DCI performed construct-ion layout services 6,000 seat Tsongas Arena at times under very constraints. Pile cap designs for the entire structure were provided by structural engineers one day, calculated by DCI that night and laid out in the field the next morning. Existing Conditions Plans prepared for the two projects illustrate the firm’s dedication to providing a clear and comprehensive product.
